Will Raul Castro as president improve US and Cuban relationship
50 years have gone by and the diffrrence in political system and relations between the United States and Cuba is still where it was at the start. Ever since the day came when Fidel Castro started the revoltion in Cuba, relations with the USA have been in disagreement. The US ideals of freedom and using capitalism whereas Cuba is the opposite where its communism. This opposite in ideals has created a feud between the countries for decades. When Fidel Castro gave complete power to his brother Raul Castro this marked the first change in Cuba`s presidency since the embargo. But how will this change affect the relationship between Cuba and the United States. On this recent article by CNN it mentions that  Raul has actually set the table to enter talks with the United States. "The table is set. If they want to discuss the problems of democracy, as they say, freedom of speech, human rights, the things they have invented for years, we will discuss them," he said. With statements like this one maybe we can hope for a better relationsip between Cuba and United States. Simply engaging in talks with eachother would be a step in the right direction. Who knows maybe a change in Cuba presedency will have a good impact on  relations which could lead to political progress. Raul stating that its open for discussion is that right step for a postitive relationship.

The Alan Gross story: How its affecting cuban and american relations

As I mentioned in my previous blog, relations between Cuba and the United States have been rather with no real improvement. Barrack Obama has said to try and improve the relationship and maybe one day remove the embargo between the US and Cuba. For anything like this to happen there is currently a roadblock for any more improvement and that is Alan Gross. Alan Gross is currently serving a 15 year imprisonment on charges for illegally setting up internet networks in Cuba under a US program that promotes political change on the communist island.
For Alan Gross to reach freedom Cuba has hinted  that in exchange for him they would have to  receive five Cuban members who are currently imprisoned in the United States from a 2001 trial in Miami. Barack Obama has stated that this trade off is out of the question. This problem in relations with these two countries has created a letter sent to cuban president Raul Castro urging his release. This letter has been signed by 44 senators making it the strongest appeal yet by congress in the case of Alan Gross. If this Alan Gross situation doesn`t get resolved soon it will create a major obstacle in the improvement of this already un friendly relationship.
